However, the state-run Swedish casinos continued to flourish: from 2001 to 2003 four Swedish-owned brick-and-mortar casinos were established to fill the state budget.

Ten years passed until in 2018 the Swedish government put forward a proposal to re-regulate the local gambling market by introducing a licensing system and allowing foreign operators to provide gambling services within the territory of the country.
